Let’s Pledge Press Freedom

MediaWatch-Image3.5.16Today is World Press Freedom Day, and that’s one reason to revisit cases where this freedom was violated through the year. The Hoot reports that there have been 21 cases of attacks on journalists and one case of hostage taking this past year. A journalist also lost his life in UP. Meanwhile in Nepal, the SC ended jail-time for veteran editor Kanak Mani Dixit, who was arrested on April 22 by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority. » Media Freedom is constantly under threat with the growing violence against women journalists. At the launch of the 2016 edition of CPJ’s ‘Attacks on the Press’ book, documenting the daily violence and harassment that women journos face, Kim Barker NYT reporter said “You don’t even have to be in a conflict zone to be violated anymore.” Read other accounts by women journalists across the world here. » A major redesign for HT Media’s financial newspaper Mint is on the cards. The only paper to be published in a unique Berliner format, is set to be re-launched as a broadsheet. Designed by acclaimed Mario Garcia, the new format may have a summer unveiling. » Under the NDA government, paid news might soon become an electoral offence for poll candidates. The BJP led government has filed an affidavit in the SC which proposes to amend the Representation of People Act, 1951 with a provision that makes paid news punishable. Media outlets found participating are also likely to be punished, with their publication being suspended for 45 to 90 days.

Alpha Club

MediaWatch-Image18.11Based on subscribers’ feedback BARC has introduced Alpha Club, a monthly bulletin for insights and analysis of Indian audience measurement data for the preceding four weeks. The communique’s first edition, rolled out on November 17th, contained two sets of analyses for Week 37-40 and 41-44. » DD National was bumped off  the TV ratings leaderboard for Hindi General Entertainment Channels. According to BARC data for Week 44, the top spot was bagged by Star Plus, followed by highest gainers Zee TV and Colors jointly at the 3rd position. » After issuing a joint statement, leading newspaper editors in Nagaland published blank editorial pages as a sign of protest against an army diktat. Read what the editors told the BBC about accusations they face. » Only AAP HoDs allowed to speak to the media. A recently issued circular by the Delhi Government clearly prohibits all other bureaucrats from talking to the media without prior approval from the concerned minister. The directive from Deputy CM Manish Sisodia might have been called for by several HoDs seeking proper guidelines for media interaction. » The search for Indian innovators begins. Mint, in collaboration with MIT Technology Review, has launched the India chapter of ‘EmTech’. The top 10 under-35 innovators in business and technology will present at the high profile event in New Delhi in March 2016.
